Gachi Koi Nenchakujuu: Net Haishinsha no Kanojo ni naritakute

Artist/author: Seira

Overall rating:

I'm a huge fan of this manga. Whilst the story can be a little fantastical at times, overall it's a great insight into streamer culture in Japan and the many "gachikois" that plague it. The art is amazing; Seira does an amazing job of switching between a pretty seinen to a horror on a dime. Seriously, read this manga, it engrossed me and now I'll probably be following the mangaka for like... ever.

I've only read up to volume 8 so far so expect this review to be updated!

Released in 2020 and ongoing, Gachi Koi Nenchakujuu is a josei manga currently up to its 9th volume (56 chapters). The manga follows the lives of Cosmo, Ginga and Subaru; members of a controversial streamer group named "Cosmic". Whilst the group are successful, the trio are continuosly plagued by a downright deranged fanbase and the "gachikois" within it. The first 2 volumes follow the relationship between Hina and Subaru: both are arguably as bad as each other. Hina evolves from an obsessed fan to a complete yandere, whilst Subaru continuosly ignores these red flags and keeps sleeping with his female fans. Subaru's continuous ignorance of Hina, and Rikomero (another gachikoi he manipulated into sex), as threats is his downfall, which isn't satisfying but it is poignant. The 2nd volume doesn't end on some big bang, it goes out with a whimper, but the consequences of both the protagonist and Subaru's actions is very real. The highlight for me from these volumes was honestly Rikomero; she's the character who gets the most development and the only one who gets real closure (her fashion is also elite).
This part of the manga is easily my favourite. Readers learned to hate Hina and Subaru in the first part, but I feel like in this arc we learn to root for our new protagonist, Kotono. Unlike Hina, Kotono hates gachikois and simply wants the best for her favourite member of Cosmic: Cosmo. Obviously, things take a turn and Cosmo ends up right on her doorstep. Kotono begins to fall in love with Cosmo but doesn't try to force it on him. Unlike Hina, however, Kotono has a best friend who she can talk to these things about and I think it's a really good bit of reflection that we didn't get with Hina. I think the potential for romance between Kotono and Cosmo left some readers disappointed because it's undeniable that Kotono has gachikoi-ish tendencies. However, I was completely for the shipping, especially since this part of the manga amps up the action and drama. Things get crazy and I'm all for it. This shit had me yelling at 1AM and waking up my flatmates (sorry guys). Maybe I'm just too emotional... but I love this part the most.
